Key Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Consultation:
Conduct thorough periodontal assessments, including periodontal charting, gum measurement (probing), and evaluating tooth mobility.
Review and document patient medical and dental history, including any conditions that may affect periodontal health (e.g., diabetes, smoking, etc.).
Educate patients about periodontal health, treatment options, and proper oral hygiene practices to prevent disease progression.
Treatment of Periodontal Disease:
Perform non-surgical periodontal treatments, including scaling and root planing (SRP), to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline.
Apply antimicrobial agents and fluoride treatments as part of the periodontal care regimen.
Implement maintenance programs to ensure ongoing care and prevent recurrence of periodontal disease.
Collaborative Care:
Work closely with the dentist to develop individualized treatment plans for patients with advanced periodontal issues.
Keep accurate records of treatment and patient progress, ensuring that information is updated and easily accessible.
Education and Prevention:
Provide patients with tailored instruction on improving homecare techniques, such as proper brushing, flossing, and the use of oral irrigation devices.
Offer advice on lifestyle modifications (e.g., smoking cessation) to improve periodontal health.
Encourage routine dental visits for periodontal maintenance and preventive care.
Post-Treatment Care:
Monitor patients after periodontal treatments and surgeries, offering follow-up care and support to ensure healing and long-term oral health.
Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans, adjusting care as necessary to address any ongoing issues.
Equipment and Infection Control:
Maintain a clean and safe working environment by adhering to infection control protocols and sterilization procedures.
Regularly inspect and maintain equipment used for periodontal treatments, ensuring itâs in optimal condition.
Continuing Education:
Stay up to date with the latest advancements in periodontal care, new techniques, and treatment options by attending workshops, conferences, or taking specialized courses. (provided by employer)
Apply new knowledge to improve patient care and treatment outcomes.
Qualifications:
Education:
Associateâs degree in dental hygiene from an accredited institution.
Certification and licensure to practice dental hygiene in the state or country where employed.
Additional certifications in periodontal therapy or advanced dental hygiene may be preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience in a dental hygiene role, with preference given to those with experience in periodontal care.
Familiarity with periodontal charting, scaling and root planing, and other periodontic treatments.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of periodontal disease, including symptoms, stages, and treatment options.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with patients and the dental team.
Proficient in using dental hygiene equipment, including ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments.
Attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced, clinical environment.
Certifications:
CPR/BLS certification (or equivalent).
Optional: Periodontal certification or continuing education courses focused on periodontics.
Work Environment:
Clinical setting in a dental office, often involving patient interaction, assisting with procedures, and maintaining a sterile environment.

Work Schedule:
