Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Dentist, the Dental Hygienist is responsible for the direct provision of oral hygiene and appropriate preventive services and for providing appropriate oral health information to dental patients of the center.
Essential Functions:
1.) This position requires compliance with MSHS’ compliance standards, including the Code of Conduct, Compliance Program, and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of the regular performance evaluation.
2.) Assists in the oral health management of all clinic patients. 3.) Obtains baseline oral hygiene assessment data based upon accepted principles of oral hygiene and periodontal care. 4.) Records patient-hygienist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided. 5.) Provides oral health education and appropriate individual counseling for all center dental patients. 6.) Provides clinical oral hygiene services including dental prophylaxis, scaling, sealant application and fluoride application consistent with accepted professional practices and standards and in compliance with applicable state law and the center’s clinical protocols. 7.) Ensures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directive and center policy as well as state federal regulations(s). 8.) Complies in full with the center’s Exposure Control Plan. 9.) Assists with the integration of appropriate patient dental hygiene care with other health care professionals involved in the patient’s health care management. 10.) Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education in the community as requested. 11.) Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by a dentist in accordance with state regulations and law as well as Dental Department protocol and directive. 12.) Responsible for personal compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and center rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dental hygiene and the clinical provision of dental hygiene services.
Position Requirements Minimum Education and Experience 1.) Graduation from an accredited school of dental hygiene. 2.) Unrestricted license to practice Oral Hygiene in the State of Alaska. 3.) Two years of clinical experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Incumbent must be able to demonstrate 4.) Comprehensive knowledge of oral hygiene care in outpatient settings. 5.) Ability to use computer programs to include Word, Excel, other Microsoft products, and electronic health records. 6.) Proficiency in the use of Electronic Dental Records program(s). 7.) Ability to work as a team member, with other staff and patients, towards the common goal of delivering quality dental health care. 8.) Knowledge of commonly used medications and their effects. 9.) Ability to observe, evaluate and report reactions and changes in the physical and mental conditions or status of patients. 10.) Working knowledge of accurate documentation and appropriate use of records. 11.) Skill in exercising high degree of initiative, discretion, sound decision making and effective problem solving skills. 12.) Working knowledge of HIPAA laws and ability to apply them. . 13.) Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to relate in a positive, courteous, and caring manner to staff and the individuals seeking services. 14.) Ability to interact positively with individuals and families from a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds as well as alternative lifestyles. 15.) Ability to work independently, remain self-motivated, and promote cooperation and cohesiveness among co-workers.

16.) Clear background check; 17.) Current tuberculosis screening test result; 18.) First Aid, CPR and CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) certifications must be obtained when offered through the agency; may substitute current MANDT certificate for CPI.

Pay: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 30 per week
