As a Registered Dental Hygienist, your main responsibility will be to deliver preventative and therapeutic dental care to patients within a dental practice. In addition, you will collaborate with dentists to develop effective treatment plans and provide comprehensive patient education. This role requires leadership and teamwork to ensure patients receive optimal care. To excel in this position, you must possess exceptional communication skills, work well in a team, and have a commitment to going the extra mile to ensure the best possible patient outcomes. Your willingness to work closely with both patients and the dental team will be critical to your success as a Registered Dental Hygienist.
Education Level:
A degree or certificate in hygiene from an accredited program
Work Experience:
1-2 years of RDH experience preferred.
Requirements:
Current state specific dental hygiene license
Current state specific radiation safety certificate
If performing additional/state specific functions, must have a current state specific license or certificate which authorizes the individual to perform the additional/expanded job functions as required by state law (e.g. local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, restorative, etc.)
Current CPR certificate
Complete Continuing Education Requirements as required by the American Dental licensing board.
Essential Functions:
Obtain/review the patients' health history and/or treatment records
Conduct patient assessments to evaluate oral health and identify potential dental problems
Follow protocols and polices set in place to ensure standard of care
Apply fluorides and other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay.
Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist.
Remove deposits and stains from teeth by performing prophylaxis, debridement, scaling and root planning or periodontal maintenance
Examine gums, using probes, to locate periodontal recessed gums and signs of gum disease.
Feel and visually examine gums for sores and signs of disease.
Feel lymph nodes under patient's chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate the presence of oral cancer.
Collaborate with the dentist to develop treatment plans and ensure proper care for patients
Administer local anesthetic agents.
Document all chart notes in an efficient and thorough manner
Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment after treatment, following accepted infection control practices
Maintain dental equipment and sharpen dental instruments.
Maintain patient recall system by adhering to office scheduling protocols
Schedule and confirm patients
Take impressions and/or use oral scanner
Use Intra oral camera to show patients areas of concern
Provide health education to improve and maintain the oral health of patients.
In some states, with the required certification, hygienists may perform other duties such as administering anesthesia, placing temporary fillings, removing sutures, applying sealants or other preventive materials and smoothing/polishing restorations
Take x-rays.
Understand and comply with HIPAA and OSHA regulations.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by staff member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the staff member may be regularly required to sit for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is required to do detailed work, using arms, hands and fingers to handle and feel objects associated with work. The staff member intermittently is required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, bend or reach throughout the day. Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity is needed.
Work Environmen t
Work is performed in a dental office which is a clinical and office environment. Hygienists are occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood and blood borne pathogens; therefore, compliance with proper safety and OSHA standards is required. This role routinely utilizes standard dental and office equipment.
