Job Description
This job posting for a Public Health, Direct Service Dental Hygienist at Firefly. Everyday Firefly sets out to ensure all children learn, grow, and develop to realize their full potential. This person will work with the I-Smile team to provide enabling and direct services at designated sites which may include sealant clinics and provide administrative support activities for Public Health programming and I-Smile services.
Qualifications:
Must possess active Iowa Dental Hygiene license with knowledge of the dental hygiene state statutes and codes
Must have or be able to obtain public health supervision. This requires 1 years of clinical experience as well as being able to establish a supervising dentist relationship.
The ability to carry out the assigned duties of this position independently or with minimal supervision.
Ability to travel throughout Cass, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie and Shelby counties.
Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
Ability to work in a clinical setting for a full shift.
Attention to detail, positive customer service, effective teamwork skills and proactive attitude.
Respect for and sensitivity to the needs and rights of others, including those with differing cultural, racial, sexual or ethnic identities.

Proof of CPR certification must be provided.
Must have current driverâs license and personal vehicle.
Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges .
Must successfully pass criminal background check
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide direct dental services for the I-Smile @ School program
Direct services include provision of oral screenings, fluoride varnish, oral hygiene instruction and sealants where applicable. Place dental sealants on all recommended surfaces (first and second permanent molars and first and second premolars).
Review patient medical history, records examination and treatment information.
Instruct patient/parents in preventive dental care by demonstrating brushing and flossing techniques. Explain the common causes of decay and its relationship to general diet. Patient instruction must be done in a friendly and enthusiastic manner.
Complete paperwork properly and in a timely manner. Maintain accurate files for patients and quality control.
Make sure chart is accurate and signed
Implement appropriate infection control guidelines based on clinic location.
Cooperate with school staff to maintain good working relationships throughout the clinic.
Render first aid as needed. Detect signs of syncope and shock in patients
Complete tasks as assigned and directed by the I-Smile Coordinator in responsible and timely manner
Other duties as assigned
Relationships and Authority:
This position has no supervisory authority. The I-Smile Coordinator has supervisory authority over this position in relation to personnel issues, clinical and departmental issues.
Evaluation:
The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the I-Smile Coordinator. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Direct services are performed at various school sites. Supplies need to be loaded/unloaded into your vehicle and transported to the scheduled site. Generally this is accomplished in conjunction with the rest of the I-Smile @ School team.
Assisting at School-Based Sealant Clinics:
The position is located within a school utilizing two sets of portable equipment. Lifting of this equipment and various supplies is required. Occupational hazards include but are not limited to the following safety and infection control issues: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases and bio-hazardous materials that may be transmitted through bodily fluids and cause risk in the treatment applied to the patient. Work throughout the clinic area. Employee will sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during work hours. Employee is, on occasion, subject to emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.
Compensation:
This is a temporary/contract position that will work up to 32 hours per month during the school year
$45.00 per hour
