Job Description
Position Summary: Responsible for providing preventive oral health education and dental hygiene services to patients.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate with administrative/front desk staff to efficiently schedule hygiene patients.
Accurately chart patientsââ¬â¢ periodontal health.
Educate patients on oral health, including the role of nutrition.
Ensure patient comfort during treatment and help alleviate anxiety.
Apply cavity-preventative agents such as fluoride and sealants.
Perform thorough and gentle prophylaxis for patients.
Accurately record all provided treatments.
Take radiographs as prescribed by the dentist.
Administer local anesthetics (if permitted by state law).
Perform scaling, root planing, and selective polishing as needed.
Review and update patient health and dental history.
Maintain cleanliness and follow sterilization procedures in the treatment room.
Provide tobacco cessation counseling to patients.
Securely handle and store patient records in compliance with HIPAA and office policies.
Typical Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
Work is performed in a clinical dental setting with contact with patients and staff.
Exposure to medicinal preparations, communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other clinic environment hazards.
Occasionally working in a fast-paced clinical setting, emergency situations, or during irregular hours.
Requires physical demands such as standing, walking, sitting, reaching, and occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Experience/Qualifications:
Strong interpersonal skills to maintain rapport with patients, dentists, staff, and the community.
Ability to effectively present information to individuals and small groups.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and ability to learn electronic healthcare systems.
Spanish language skills are highly desirable.
Education/Certifications/Licenses:
Graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited program with a minimum of an associate degree in applied science.
Licensure to practice Dental Hygiene in the State of Michigan.
