Periodontal Dental Hygienist
Location: Brookfield, Shorewood, Oconomowoc
Job Summary
The Periodontal Dental Hygienist is responsible for performing various periodontal treatments, educating patients on oral hygiene and periodontal health, and assisting in the management of periodontal disease. This position requires advanced clinical skills and a deep understanding of periodontal anatomy, disease progression, and therapeutic techniques. The role involves working collaboratively with a team of dental professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Periodontal Assessments and Examinations
Conduct comprehensive periodontal evaluations, including probing depth measurements, gum recession assessments, and bleeding on probing (BOP) checks.
Record and chart all findings accurately in patient records.
Scaling and Root Planing
Perform non-surgical periodontal therapy, such as scaling and root planing, using manual and ultrasonic instruments.
Administer local anesthesia as needed for deep cleaning procedures.
Periodontal Maintenance
Implement and manage periodontal maintenance programs for patients with a history of gum disease.
Schedule and conduct routine follow-ups for patients receiving periodontal treatment.
Patient Education and Counseling
Educate patients on proper brushing, flossing techniques, and the importance of maintaining periodontal health.
Provide guidance on lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation and dietary habits, to support periodontal therapy outcomes.
Assisting in Surgical Procedures
Assist periodontists with periodontal surgical procedures, including flap surgeries, tissue grafting, and implant placement.
Prepare and sterilize instruments and ensure a sterile field during surgeries.
Documentation and Record-Keeping
Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including treatment notes, consent forms, and radiographic images.
Ensure compliance with all dental regulations and HIPAA requirements.
Radiographic Imaging
Take and interpret dental radiographs (X-rays) and digital images to evaluate bone levels and detect signs of periodontal disease.
Team Collaboration
Work closely with periodontists, dental assistants, and administrative staff to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
Participate in case presentations and contribute to interdisciplinary care discussions.
Qualifications
Education: Associate or Bachelorââ¬â¢s Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
Licensure: Active and valid state licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH).
Certification: Local anesthesia certification and CPR/BLS certification.
Experience: Previous experience in a periodontal or specialty dental practice is preferred.
Skills: Strong clinical skills in periodontal therapy, excellent communication, patient management, and proficiency in using dental software systems.
