Job Description
Dental Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures
taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays)
asking about the patient's medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse
serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling)
teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health;
(e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)
taking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth)
performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer
communicating with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies)
helping to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery
Dental Assistant Requirements and Qualifications
Accurate and precise attention to detail
Excellent understanding of dental hygiene procedures
Compassionate and caring of patients
Knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Able to work in an intense, concentrated environment
Calm and cool-headed with a positive attitude
Complies with all regulations, protocols, and procedures
Dental Assisting certification: Licensed, registered, or certified by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)
Current certification in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
X-Ray Certification: Meet all local and state requirements to operate radiography equipment
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
Licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF)
Current CPR certification preferred
Radiology certification preferred
1-2 years of experience as an RDA
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proven ability to follow outlined policies and guidelines
Possess a professional and positive attitude
Knowledge about dental software- Dentrix, Eaglesoft , open dental
Dental Charting and Treatment Planning.
