Dental Assistant Job Description
Nakoma Dental is seeking a part-time or full-time Dental Assistant to work at our small, established, and privately owned practice conveniently located in Madison.
Dental assistants should have excellent customer service skills, administrative skills, and basic dental knowledge. Dental assistants should be well-organized with great attention to detail. The following instruction and asking good questions is a must. We want you to be skilled in providing direct or indirect patient care, anticipate the next step, take initiative, and be able to make dental procedures as smooth as possible. A dental assistant in our office performs a variety of dental assisting duties to promote quality dentistry for our patients in a low stress and safe environment. Assistants must assist the doctor, teach the patients how to care for their teeth, communicate effectively with patients (parents if patient is a minor), maintain equipment and inventory, and follow universal precautions and all OSHA requirements to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
Our office is open Monday through Thursday with no evening, weekends or holidays. We specialize in General & Cosmetic Dentistry, Invisalign, Airway/Sleep/Snoring, TMD and more.
Primary Duties:
Welcome customers in the dental office
Prepare customers for treatments or checkups ensuring their comfort
Select and set up instruments, equipment and material needed
Assisting with: Crowns, bridges, veneers, dentures, partial dentures, and flippers, splint delivery and adjustments, amalgam and resin fillings, extractions, crown lengthening, Invisalign appointments, new patient exams, limited exams, bite analysis exams, and sealants with four-handed dentistry
Provide oral hygiene and post-operative care instructions as well as educate pts. with their current and next treatment planned.
Perform instrument sterilization and infection control, including cleaning autoclaves, Statims, and weekly spore (sterile) tests while maintaining infection control during procedures
Giving post op instructions after dental surgery, suture removal, as well as dry socket packing placement and removal
Making impressions, facebows, pouring and trimming models, fabricating hard and soft splints, retainers, bleach trays, mouth guards, custom trays, (make, adjust, and polish), as instructed by the doctor
Taking images: digital x-rays, panoramic images, extraoral and intraoral camera pictures
Orders supplies, cleans and stocks operatories
Performs maintenance on all dental equipment routinely
iTero element scanning for full arch and restorative cases
Mixing cements, fabricating and cementing temporary crowns
Understands dental terms, tooth numbering systems, and dental and periodontal charting
Be prepared for the morning meetings and monthly staff meetings
Maintain accurate patient records and assist with needs of dental insurance through quality x-rays and treatment write-ups
Aid in periodontal charting and keeping everyone on schedule - know the pulse of the practice

BLS CPR Certification

Ability to perform regulated non-surgical tasks like coronal polishing is a plus

Monitor handpiece maintenance

Follow PPE and infection control procedures
Stock ad inventory treatment rooms
Assist with after-hours emergency care as directed by doctor
Take digital radiographs and mount them
Give post op instructions
Preform denture repair procedures as directed by doctor
Fabricate Provisionals as directed by the doctor
Assist with denture relines and adjustment as directed by the doctor
Preform all expanded duties as allowed by state law under direction of the doctor
Assure all correct chart notes and production are walked out with future proposed treatment entered correctly and scheduled correctly
Sterilization Duties
Clean and sterilize instruments, handpieces, and burs
Keep up with OSHA regulations for sterilization procedures
Restock all instruments in proper locations after sterilization
Lab Duties
Clean and maintain lab on a daily basis
Maintain lab supplies
Fabricate proper study models, impressions, casts, and mountings,
Fabricate custom trays, splint, and bleaching trays as directed by doctor
Maintain all articulators are clean and in working order
Office duties
Maintain daily appearance of office
Call patients to follow up after difficult treatment
Prepare for and contribute to morning huddle meetings
Prepare for and attend staff meetings
Coordinate ordering and storage of supplies
Attend appropriate continuing education courses annually
Contribute to team spirt
Secondary Duties:
Understands dental insurance codes

Physical Requirements: Must be in good physical condition and be able to withstand the stress and demands of an active position. Must be able to perform many hours of standing, walking, stooping, bending and sitting. Must have manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and adequate vision and hearing needed in daily work.
Hazards: The dental office environment may result employees being exposed to toxic chemicals, radiation, and increased noise level.

Dental experience: 1-3 years preferred
