Job Description

PURPOSE
Under the general supervision of the Dentist, the Dental Hygienist provides oral prophylactic and dental hygiene treatment to patients presenting with a variety of medical conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Responsible for probing, providing routine and advanced prophylactic and therapeutic dental care to all patients including post-surgical, acute gingivitis and periodontal patients using a variety of scalers and ultrasonic equipment.
· Upon referral from the dentist, the dental hygienist examines patients’ surrounding tissues and teeth to determine extent of abnormal condition requiring treatment. Plans dental hygiene treatment and series of appointments in accordance with existing conditions.
· Administers local anesthesia under the direct supervision of the dentist.
· Places rubber dam and sealants under the general supervision of the Dentist.
· Performs additional procedures such as records medical and dental histories, reviews patient’s dietary habits, administers caries prevention agents, desensitizes root surfaces, root planning, takes and pours impressions for study casts, educates oral hygiene and instructs patients in home care therapy and proper diet as it relates to oral health.
· Proficiency with computers and ability to learn the NextGen dental software. Ability to type at least 30 wpm.
· Knowledge to set up a patient recall system to insure follow-up treatment for patients involved in the dental program.
· Must have knowledge involving use of X-rays and must have had experience in taking and interpreting X-rays.
· Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals and with groups.
· Ability to express ideas and communicate information both orally and in writing in a clear and logical manner.
· Actively supports and participates in chronic disease collaborative(s) and/or other re-engineering and quality improvement efforts, including testing and implementation of changes as appropriate
· Adhere to all required OSHA and health regulations.
· Ability to develop and present oral lectures, demonstrations and visual displays to patient groups and clinical personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Incumbent must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in Arizona and must be certified as a radiographer in their field.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Air conditioned office, considerable work on desk top computer.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $45.00 - $60.00 per hour
