Job Description
Dental Hygienists provide direct patient care and responsibilities include screening patients during checkups, reviewing/ updating a patient's dental history, providing home care instructions to improve a patient's oral health, providing preventive dental care services like dental sealants and fluoride treatments, taking x-rays and reviewing them for signs of dental disease.
Graduate of an accredited program approved by the American Dental Association, successful completion of Dental Hygiene National Board, Dental Hygiene SRTA exam, and Licensed through Virginia Board of Dentistry.
This position requires the ability to perform scaling and root debridement, removal of all stains, patient education, tobacco counseling, and work with all age/minority populations.
This position also requires a person with the ability to use clinical assessment skills and perception to determine the needs of the patient while working with the medical provider.
Must maintain CPR certification for all life cycles.
Must maintain 15 hours of state required continued education credits.
Must be energetic, flexible and self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
Must have good communication, teamwork and computer skills
Must demonstrate excellent internal and external customer service skills.
Must demonstrate an understanding of the intent, follow standards, guidelines and protocols related to achieving and maintaining certifications by outside agencies.
Must demonstrate a personal professional commitment to the mission of Eastern Shore Rural Health System and its Mission Statement.
Ability to provide bilingual patient care is a plus.

The following duties shall only be delegated to the Dental Hygienist under direction with the dentist being present:
Scaling and root planning of natural and restored teeth using hand instrumentation, rotary instruments, and ultrasonic devices.
Performing an initial examination of teeth and surrounding tissues including the charting of carious lesions, periodontal pockets or other abnormal conditions for assisting the Dentist in the diagnosis.
Polishing of natural and restored teeth.
Subgingival irrigation or subgingival application of topical schedule VI medications agent.
The following duties shall be delegated to the Dental Hygienist to perform under general supervision without the dentist being present:
Routine scaling of natural and restored teeth using hand instrumentation, rotary instruments, and ultrasonic devices.
Polishing of natural and restored teeth.
Clinical examination of teeth and surrounding tissues including the charting of carious lesions, periodontal pockets or other abnormal conditions for further evaluation and diagnosis by the dentist.
Subgingival irrigation or subgingival application of topical schedule VI medications agent.
The following duties shall be delegated to the Dental Hygienist to perform under Remote Supervision, if the Dental Hygienist is privileged, without the dentist being present:
Routine scaling of natural and restored teeth using hand instrumentation, rotary instruments and ultrasonic devices.
Polishing of natural and restored teeth.
Clinical examination of teeth and surrounding tissues including the charting of carious lesions, periodontal pockets or other abnormal conditions for further evaluation and diagnoses by the dentist.
Subgingival irrigation or subgingival application of topical schedule VI medications agent.
The Dental Hygienist will sign ESRHSâ Written Practice Protocol (for standing orders) and communicate all findings to the Supervising Dentist (CDO) via an eCW Telephone Encounter.
Implement educational and informative dental and hygiene programs used for preventive and maintenance care with patients.
Instructs patients in oral hygiene care.
Clean and prepare instruments for use at chairside.
Updates patient chart daily/weekly, as needed.
Makes necessary notations into patient chart as procedures have been performed and signed.
Schedule recall visits, whenever all possible, at the end of an appointment/after patient care.
Takes and archives radiographs electronically.
Assist with sterilization procedures.
Follows ESRHS' OSHA Bloodborne pathogens including proper disposal of sharps and contaminated waste, and follows universal precautions for all patients and procedures.
There is an expected number of dental hygiene visits that must be met annually. This number will be determined from the ESRHS budget. The Chief Dental Officer will review this expectation with each dental hygienist prior to the beginning of every fiscal year as well as share monthly progress reports.
Management may modify, add or remove essential job functions as necessary, or as changing organizational needs require.
