Position Overview:A pediatric dental hygienist is responsible for providing dental hygiene care and education to children in a dental office or clinic. They work closely with the dentist to ensure optimal oral health and prevent dental problems in pediatric patients. The hygienist performs various dental procedures, educates patients and parents on oral hygiene practices, and maintains a safe and comfortable environment for young patients.
Key Responsibilities:1. Dental Cleanings and Examinations:- Perform thorough dental cleanings, including scaling, polishing, and removing plaque and stains from teeth.- Conduct oral examinations to assess the dental health of pediatric patients, documenting any issues or concerns.- Take and develop dental X-rays as necessary with appropriate safety precautions.
2. Pediatric Dental Procedures:- Assist the dentist in performing dental procedures specific to children, such as applying fluoride varnish, sealants, and topical anesthetics.- Administer local anesthesia to patients.- Support the dentist during procedures, ensuring the patient's comfort and safety.
3. Patient Education:- Educate pediatric patients and their parents on oral hygiene practices, including proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques.- Provide information on diet and nutrition as it relates to oral health in children.- Demonstrate proper use of dental hygiene tools and recommend suitable dental products for children.
4. Oral Health Assessment and Charting:- Conduct a comprehensive oral health assessment, recording information about tooth decay, gum health, and any existing oral conditions.- Maintain accurate dental records, including charting the progress and treatment plans for each pediatric patient. Experience in Eaglesoft is a plus!- Collaborate with the dentist to identify and address any emerging oral health concerns.
5. Patient Care and Comfort:- Establish a rapport with pediatric patients, ensuring they feel comfortable and at ease during dental visits.- Minimize anxiety and fear in young patients by using child-friendly language and explaining procedures in a way they can understand.- Utilize behavior management techniques to calm anxious or uncooperative children.
6. Infection Control and Safety:- Follow strict infection control protocols and maintain a clean and sterilized work environment.- Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures to protect both staff and patients from potential hazards.- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to pediatric dental hygiene practice.
Qualifications and Skills:- Dental Hygiene License: Must hold a valid dental hygienist license in the state of Illinois.- Pediatric Dental
