Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Under Direct Supervision assists dentists assists dentists in providing dental services to patients in clinics and hospitals; performs related work.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
2. Assists dentists by handing them required instruments for treatment of patients.
3. Sterilizes instruments, disinfects surface areas, and maintains clinic and clinic equipment in a hygienic condition, in accordance with infection control procedures.
4. Takes, develops, and mounts dental radiographs.
5. Mixes amalgams, cements, composites, and other materials.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by a course of study consisting of at least 600 instructional hours at an approved school for Dental Assistants; or2. A four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by a course of study consisting of at least 300 instructional hours at an approved school for Dental Assistants plus six months full-time satisfactory experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking, developing, and mounting dental radiographs, assisting dentist at chairside, sterilizing dental instrument using autoclave; or3. A four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent plus one year of full-time satisfactory experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in 2 above; or4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to 1, 2, or 3 above. However, all candidates must have at least a four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.
Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist's office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.
